Borrowers plan mortgage overpayments
More than one in ten British homeowners are planning overpayments on their mortgage in the next six months, according to research.
A survey carried out by the Abbey shows 12 per cent of mortgage holders are planning to make the move.
Meanwhile, just one per cent of those questioned were thinking about making an underpayment, with three per cent considering a payment holiday.
Phil Cliff, director of Abbey Mortgages, said: "It is great to see that people are quite rightly prioritising their payments ahead of other financial commitments."
Mr Cliff added the figures show consumers are taking advantage of "mortgages offering flexibility".
Ten per cent of participants claimed they will be looking to change their policy within the next six months.
Figures collected by the Abbey also show mortgage debt is likely to be at its highest in the south-east, while more consumers in Wales and the south-west are considering a break from payments than anywhere else.
The news comes shortly after the Times claimed latest statistics show homeowners will need a deposit of at least £37,119 in order to get the best mortgage deals.
